Youth Climbing

Buchanan Park Recreation Center has a 41-foot climbing pinnacle in its rotunda, available for open climbing and classes.  Learn more about Climbing Classes, the Pre-Climbing Team, and Adaptive Climbing below. During the summer, there is an Outdoor Climbing Camp for youth to participate in. 

Adaptive Climbing (5 years and older) - NEW! 

For people 5 years and up with intellectual and physical disabilities, our trained climbing wall instructors will help participants reach new heights with Adaptive Climbing Wall sessions.

Youth Climbing Classes (4 to 12 Years) 

Sign up to conquer the pinnacle at the Buchanan Park Rec Center (BPRC). During this class, children will learn the right place to climb as well as safety techniques associated with climbing. Fees are per week. Note: Students attending climbing classes must wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. Crocs, sandals, and skirts are not allowed on the wall at any time.

Teen Climbing Classes (12 to 17 Years)

Belay Certification 

Belay-certified climbers are permitted to climb during open hours when a climbing instructor is not present.  If harnesses are needed, they are available to rent (for an additional fee) at the Buchanan Park Recreation Center (BPRC) front desk.

Belay Lessons (16+ Years)

  • Learn the techniques necessary to belay safely and become a belay certified climber on the BPRC pinnacle
  • Belay Certification Exam included with lesson, must pass certification exam, or re-take Belay Lesson
    • Belay Lessons are scheduled through Ryan. Please email Ryan at rkennedy@eprdco.gov to schedule a belay lesson. 
  • Fees: $40 for District Residents and $50 Non-District Residents

Belay & Auto Belay Certification (16+ Years)

  • The certification process gives three chances to demonstrate techniques learned
  • Belay certification required to belay another climbing participant 
  • Once completed you will be issued a belay certification pass (valid for one year)
  • Fees: $15 for District Residents and $19 for Non-District Residents

Auto Belay

The new auto belay system will allow the experienced climber to come in and get that needed workout on the pinnacle without needing to have a partner to belay them. To be able to use the auto belay system during non-open climbing hours climbers will need to go through our belay certification process. 

Note: Registration closes one week prior to the start of the class.

Note: We do not make age exceptions unless your child has a birthday during the session you are registering for.

Note: Each class requires a minimum of 4 participants. We will contact you to reschedule or credit you if less than 4 participants are registered.

Missed Classes: In the event that your child misses a class, we will not be able to accommodate make ups due to space limitations. Missed days cannot be pro-rated for a refund or credit.
